Year - Walkers
The Long March is open to everyone aged 14 or over, who is willing to raise money through sponsorship.
Unlike many similar events, you are not provided with a map for the Long March. Instead you are guided along by volunteer marshals who stand at key points around the route. These marshals not only direct the walkers, but they also provide an essential point of contact for those retiring and, in some cases, refreshments.
You can choose to attempt either the 13 mile half marathon, or go for the full length 26 mile hike. Although we would encourage everyone to try and reach their chosen goal, it is not compulsary and you can retire at any of the many marshal points along the route. If you choose to retire early you will be provided with transport back to the YMCA.
There are several rest centres along the route which provide refreshments, toilet facilities and, depending on the weather, somewhere to shelter from the cold for a while. St John Ambulance are also on hand at the rest centres should you require any medical assistance.
If you are looking for a challenge the Long March certainly fits the bill. The route changes every year so even if you have taken part before it will still offer a new and rewarding experience.
